To start a mini skid steer rental business, begin with a small fleet that covers three needs: a narrow machine for backyards, a mid-size loader for everyday digging and a heavier one for contractors. Add the attachments your area asks for, a shelf of wear parts and, if you can, one engine family across the fleet. You can buy a single machine to test demand, or fill a container once you know what rents.
This guide is for equipment rental yards, landscaping firms adding a rental line and new rental businesses in the United States and other markets. It sets out how we would plan a first fleet from our nine mini skid steers, which attachments to stock, how to handle fuel, parts and paperwork, and what a business plan needs to cover. We build these machines at our factory in Xuzhou, China, and sell them direct, one machine or a full container at a time. You can read more about our company or contact our team at any stage.
Key takeaways
- Demand is real: Google Keyword Planner shows about 12,100 US searches a month for “mini skid steer rental” and 1,900 for “mini skid steer rental near me” [1].
- A three-tier fleet covers most jobs: the 930 mm BL-T360-H, a 300 to 410 kg mid-size loader, and the 500 kg BL-T1000-H.
- Six of our models take a petrol or diesel engine; the 750 and 1000 sizes are diesel only. Label every fuel cap, because the wrong fuel can damage the engine and its emission controls.
- Stock attachments by job, not by catalogue. Hydraulic flow differs between models, so we confirm each attachment against the loader when we quote.
- Order from one machine. We dispatch in 8 to 30 working days, and a 40HQ container carries 10 to 30 loaders on steel racks.
Is there demand for mini skid steer rentals?
Yes. A mini skid steer rental business is a hire firm that lends compact loaders, with their attachments, by the day or week. Homeowners, landscapers and small contractors rent mini skid steers for jobs that last a day or a weekend, such as digging post holes, spreading gravel or clearing a lot. US search data for November 2026 shows how people look for them:
| Search term (United States) | Average monthly searches |
|---|---|
| mini skid steer rental | 12,100 |
| mini skid steer rental near me | 1,900 |
| walk behind skid steer rental | 720 |
| mini skid steer mulcher rental | 260 |
| mini skid steer auger rental | 110 |
| mini skid steer brush cutter rental | 110 |
| mini skid steer rental cost | 90 |
Two things stand out. People search for the job as well as the machine, so mulcher, auger and brush cutter rentals each draw their own searches. And “near me” searches are local, so your listing on maps and your own website matter as much as the fleet. Check your own area before you order: call the rental yards near you, ask what they charge and how often their mini skid steers are out.
How to plan your first fleet
Plan the fleet around the narrowest access your customers face and the heaviest material they move. Our nine models run from 930 to 1,090 mm wide across the body and from 200 to 500 kg rated load. The chart places each one by width and rated load, and the table below suggests a role for each tier.

| Fleet tier | Model | Body width | Rated load | Machine weight | Fuel | Typical renter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Narrow access | BL-T360-H | 930 mm | 200 kg | 650 kg | Petrol or diesel | Homeowners, backyard and side-gate work |
| Everyday work | BL-T460-H | 1,090 mm | 300 kg | 730 kg | Petrol or diesel | Landscapers, fencing and garden jobs |
| Everyday work | BL-T750-H | 985 mm | 410 kg | 1,100 kg | Diesel | Daily digging, trenching and snow work |
| Paved sites | BL-S750-H | 985 mm | 400 kg | 1,000 kg | Diesel | Driveways, car parks and yards, where tracks scuff |
| Contractor | BL-T1000-H | 960 mm | 500 kg | 1,250 kg | Diesel | Small contractors, demolition clean-up |
| Seated option | BL-S390-C / BL-T390-C | 959 / 955 mm | 260 / 250 kg | 650 / 750 kg | Petrol or diesel | Renters who prefer to sit for longer jobs |
A first order of three or four machines covers most requests: one BL-T360-H, one or two mid-size loaders and one BL-T1000-H. Weight matters too, because renters tow the machine home. Our loaders weigh 650 to 1,250 kg before attachments, and our mini skid steer trailer guide explains how to match a trailer to each one.
Figures that matter at the rental counter
Renters ask how much the bucket holds, how long a tank lasts and whether the machine will climb their slope. Fuel tanks run from 5 L on the single-cylinder models to 20 L on the three-cylinder diesels, which sets how often a renter refuels during a full day.
| Model | Bucket | Fuel tank | Max travel speed | Gradeability | Engine options |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BL-T360-H | 0.15 m³ | 5 L | 6 km/h | 30° | KOOP / Rato / Briggs & Stratton |
| BL-T460-H | 0.15 m³ | 10 L | 6 km/h | 30° | Zongshen / KOOP / Rato / Briggs & Stratton |
| BL-S750-H | 0.15 m³ | 20 L | 6 km/h | 25° | Laidong / Yanmar / Kubota |
| BL-T750-H | 0.15 m³ | 20 L | 5 km/h | 25° | Laidong / Yanmar / Kubota |
| BL-T1000-H | 0.19 m³ | 20 L | 6 km/h | 25° | Yanmar / Kubota |
| BL-S390-C | 0.1 m³ | 5 L | 6 km/h | 25° | KOOP / Rato / Briggs & Stratton |
| BL-T390-C | 0.1 m³ | 5 L | 5 km/h | 25° | KOOP / Rato / Briggs & Stratton |
| BL-S490-C | 0.1 m³ | 10 L | 6 km/h | 25° | KOOP / Rato / Briggs & Stratton Vanguard |
| BL-T490-C | 0.1 m³ | 10 L | 5 km/h | 25° | KOOP / Rato / Briggs & Stratton Vanguard |
Petrol or diesel for a rental fleet?
The six models in our 360, 390, 460 and 490 sizes take a petrol or diesel engine; the BL-T750-H, BL-S750-H and BL-T1000-H are diesel only. Petrol suits light, occasional use by homeowners who already buy petrol. Diesel suits the bigger machines that contractors run all day. Our diesel vs gas mini skid steer guide compares the two in more detail.
If you run both fuels, label every fuel cap and train the counter staff to say it at handover. Wrong fuel is a costly repair. It is also a compliance matter. The federal rule against tampering covers using incorrect fuel or engine oil that renders the emission control system inoperative [2]. Running one fuel per tier keeps it simple.
Which attachments should a rental fleet stock?
Stock the attachments your customers ask for by name. We offer 26 attachments, grouped by the job they do, and these are the ones most rental counters would start with:
- Dig and trench: 4-in-1 bucket, auger for post holes, trencher for cables and pipes, backhoe.
- Lift and carry: pallet forks, hydraulic grapple, grapple bucket.
- Clear and level: brush cutter, mulcher, leveller, rotary tiller.
- Seasonal: sweeper and snow blower for winter, lawn aerator for spring.
Auxiliary hydraulics are the extra hydraulic lines on the lift arms that drive a powered attachment. Powered attachments run from these lines, and hydraulic flow differs from model to model, so not every attachment suits every loader. Tell us your fleet and the tools you want, and we confirm each match when we quote. The full list is in our mini skid steer attachments guide.
Parts, service and turnaround between rentals
A machine earns money only when it is out, so plan the turnaround. Check each loader when it comes back: tracks or tyres, hoses, the quick-attach pins and the fluid levels. Our mini skid steer maintenance checklist lists the daily pre-start checks, and the same list works as a return check.
Keep the parts that wear on the shelf, not on a boat. We keep a list of original wear parts you can order with the fleet, and our mini skid steer parts guide explains what to stock. Every loader carries a 12-month whole-machine warranty. If something fails, send us the model, serial number and a photo or short video, and our team guides the fix remotely and ships the parts. Running one engine family across the fleet means fewer filter and part numbers to stock.
Buying the fleet: order size, colours and shipping
A 40HQ is a 40-foot high-cube shipping container, the usual box for a fleet order. You can order one machine, pay by T/T and buy on FOB, CIF, EXW, DDP, FCA or DAP terms. We dispatch in 8 to 30 working days. By sea, a 20GP takes about six of our 360, 390, 460, 490 or 750 sizes, or four of the 1000 size. A 40HQ fitted with steel loading racks takes up to 30 of the 360 size, 22 to 24 of the others, or 10 of the 1000 size. Attachments change the plan, and we confirm it with your order. Our container loading guide has the figures for every model.
Loaders are painted to order, so a rental fleet can arrive in your company colour. Before each machine leaves, we inspect the fuel tank and pipework, run the engine, operate every movement, test the travel drive, then check for leaks and cooling. Each engine is listed as EPA Tier 4 / EU Stage V on our sheets, and you can look up any engine family in the US EPA certification data [3]. If you are weighing new machines against second-hand ones, our used mini skid steer checklist shows what to inspect.
What the business plan should cover
The US Small Business Administration lists the common sections of a traditional business plan, including an executive summary, a company description, a market analysis, organisation and management, the service or product line, marketing and sales, a funding request and financial projections [4]. For a rental fleet, three of those sections carry the most weight:
- Market analysis: who rents near you, what local yards charge and which attachments they keep in stock.
- Service line: the machines, attachments, delivery and trailer options you will offer, and your hire terms.
- Financial projections: the purchase and shipping cost of each machine, how many days a month you expect it out, and a reserve for tracks, parts and repairs.
Insurance, damage waivers and the renter’s agreement belong in the plan too. Ask a local insurer and lawyer about these, because the rules differ by state and country.
Handing a machine to a renter
Most renters are not trained operators. Give every customer a short walk-round at handover: the controls, the safe-lift limit, how to fit and lock the attachment, and where to refuel. At full engine speed, noise at the operator position can exceed 85 dB(A) on some of our models, so include hearing protection with each rental. A printed copy of the controls page from the operator’s manual makes a useful handout.
Frequently asked questions
How many mini skid steers do I need to start a rental business?
Three or four machines covering the narrow, mid-size and contractor tiers are enough to test demand. You can order one machine at a time from us and add models once you know what rents.
Which mini skid steer should a rental fleet buy first?
If most of your customers are homeowners, start with the narrow BL-T360-H, which is 930 mm wide and weighs 650 kg. If they are landscapers and small contractors, start with a 410 kg BL-T750-H or the 500 kg BL-T1000-H.
Can I mix different models in one container?
Yes. Tell us the models and attachments, and we confirm a loading plan with your order. The counts per model are in our container loading guide.
Can the machines be painted in our company colour?
Yes. Our loaders are painted to order, so tell us the colour when you order.
Do you sell directly to rental companies outside China?
Yes. We sell direct from our factory to rental yards, contractors and dealers, quoted on the trade term you choose.
